Fairy Tale/Mother Goose Bedtime (with a twist!)

This all started with the book SLEEP TIGHT, SNOW WHITE: 15 BEWITCHING BEDTIME RHYMES by Jen Arena, which can be read aloud quite easily.  It reminded me of another favorite, GOOD NIGHT, BADDIES by Deborah Underwood where many of the baddies from fairy tales gather and get ready for bed.  Could I find enough to make a storytime  with a twist?  I could and more!

I have two preschool storytimes a week so I used different titles at each one & still wasn't able to use them all.  I also used a collection of bedtime rhymes called SLEEPYTIME: BEDTIME NURSERY RHYMES by Terry Pierce.

Then came flannel boards.  There are lots of bedtime themed one but I wanted some that were Mother Goose or fairy tales & had a twist.  Here are three that I made, the first was inspired by a rhyme from SLEEPYTIME called "On Saturday Night, I lost my wife."  I changed wife to cat & added the other days of the week.  I found a moon image through Google for my felt moon, used our die machine to cut the other figures out of felt & (since I didn't have the star die handy) used some star cut-outs from a bulletin board,

ON SATURDAY NIGHT

On Saturday night, I lost my cat

And where do you think I found her?

High on the moon, singing a tune,

With all the stars around her.

On Sunday night, I lost my mouse

And where do you think I found him?

High on the moon singing a tune,

With all the stars around him.

(I continued with the rest of the days of the week)

Another flannel board came from Story Time Secrets, Rock-a-Bye Baby (Animals).

I used a cradle from a baby announcement for my cradle pattern and enlarged a tree die cut for my tree pattern.  Again, I die cut the animals from felt.

The third flannel board built on Little Boy Blue.  He's asleep, but behind which haystack?  I had farm animals behind 5 of the haystacks & we rolled the die to see which number to look under.

LITTLE BOY BLUE

Little Boy Blue, come blow your horn.
The sheep's in the meadow, the cow's in the corn.
Where is the little boy who looks after the sheep?
He's under a haystack, fast asleep.

Which haystack should we pick?
Let's give the die a roll real quick.
Number ____, can it be?
Let's take a look and see.


My patterns were primarily Google images I found with the farm animals being dies that we had in our collection.

I had a lot of fun with this and my storytime group of children and adults got some good chuckles from it as well.  Happy Storytimes!

Bedtime storytime

While looking ahead to 2011 Summer Reading, "One world, many stories", I remembered a rhyme I wrote called, "The Bedtime Train." I had some unusual felt & had cut a train using dies, then decided that it looked like a bedtime train. I couldn't find a story to fit so I wrote this:

THE BEDTIME TRAIN

(tune: The wheels on the bus)

The bedtime train comes chugging along,

Chugging along, chugging along.

The bedtime train comes chugging along,

Hauling sleep and dreams.

Here is the tank car filled with yawns,

Filled with yawns, filled with yawns.

Here is the tank car filled with yawns,

On the bedtime train.

Here is the boxcar filled with dreams,

Filled with dreams, filled with dreams,

Here is the boxcar filled with dreams,

On the bedtime train.

Here is the caboose to carry you away,

Carry you away, carry you away.

Here is the caboose to carry you away,

To the land of dreams.

The bedtime train comes chugging along,

Chugging along, chugging along.

The bedtime train comes chugging along,

Hauling sleep and dreams.

I plan to use this in a bedtime storytime with bedtime stories from around the world.

Brenda's Bedtime

I did the following several years ago for my preschool storytime & the kids had SO much fun with it. I used 7 very large plush animals to tell the story. Any animal or toy can be used with different excuses for taking them out of the bed (one squeaks, one is too hard, etc.) You can also use this as a flannel board story.

BRENDA'S BEDTIME

No matter how tired she was, Brenda never wanted to go to bed. She always needed one more drink, one more kiss, one more bedtime story.

One night when Brenda's mother was putting her to bed, Brenda cried, "I'm lonely. I need my special friend to keep me company."

"Just hurry up, Brenda. It's time to go to sleep. I'll come back in a few minutes and you better be in bed," her mother told her.

When her mother left the room, Brenda huttied to find her friend. First she found her teddy bear and put it in the bed. Then she saw her shaggy dog and put it in the bed. Brenda started to climb into bed when she saw her stuffed rabbit and put it into the bec. The next animal to be added was her elephant and then it was her monkey. Brenda looked around to see if she had forgotten anyone and saw her giraffe and her penguin and they went into the bed.

Brenda tried to climb into bed before her mother came in and there was....no room! What was she going to do? Brenda set out her penguin...but there still wasn't enough room. Then she took out her giraffe. Now she could get into bed, but when she tried to turn over, she fell out! So Brenda got up and put the penguin, the giraffe, AND the monkey into the toybox. Finally Brenda climbed into bed only to discover that her blanket wouldn't cover her and all her friends. The elephant joined the other toys in the toybox.

Now Brenda could lay in the bed AND cover herself and her friends with her blanket. The ears of her rabbit tickled her and made her wiggle, so the rabbit was hopped to the toy box. Now all that was left was Brenda, her teddy and her shaggy dog. Brenda was ready to go to sleep when the shaggy dog's fur made her sneeze! Back to the toybox he went.

When Brenda's mother looked in the door a few minutes later, Brenda was in bed, covered with her blanket and cuddling her teddy bear...fast asleep.
